3296. Edward Riggs
Military 1637, the Pequot War
Description: as a sergeantIn a letter to William Bradford dated 28 Jul 1637, John Winthrop wrote of the exploits of Edward Rigg in the Pequot war:
"...they gave order to surround the swamp, it being about a mile about; but Lieutenant Davenport, and some twelve more, not hearing that command, fell into the swamp among the Indians. The swamp was so thick with shrub wood, and so boggy with all, that some of them stuck fast, and receive many shot. Lieutenant Davenport was dangerously wounded about his armhole and another shot in the head, so as fainting, they were in great danger to have been taken by the Indians, but Sergeant Rigges, and Jeffery and two or three more resuced them, and slew diverse of the Indians with their swords."

Edward was a freeman 14 May 1634. In the Roxbury estate list done in the 1640s, Edward Rigg's valuation of twelve acres in the thousand acres at Dedhem and four pounds sterling personal estate made him one of the least affluent in Roxbury.In his will dated 2 September 1670 and proved 6 March 1671/2, "Edward Regges of Roxbury...although very crazy and weak in body...

3584. William Stafford
This William 3rd, of York Co., Va. established himself in North Carolina in that part kwnown at that time s Currituck Precinct. A part of it now forms Currituck Co., N.C.he seems to have gone there sometime before 1700. In "voume I of the North Carolina Historican and genealogical Register" pp. 301-04, it gives a rent roll of land in Albermarle Co., wthout dates by prior to 1700 "William Stafford Majork Creek, Currituck 640 acres."
In Volume I, p. 304 of the same magazine, we find a record of the Members of the Legislature, which met at a house in Perquimans Precinct, October 11, 1709, and among the names of those in the House of Burgesses we find the name of William Stafford. He married Jane Brown. We have little further information except that from the abstract of his will in the North Carolina Historican and Genealogical Register, Volume I, p. 75. He died between February and August 1728. Will dated February 16, 1728 and was probated August 3, 1728. In it he mentions his sons, John, Edward, William (4th), Samuel and his daughters Ann, Frances, Mary and Jane. Also his wife, Jane.
