14336. William Stafford

William Stafford came to Jamestown, Virginia on the ship FURTHERANCE in 1622. This is proved by the "List of Emigrants 1600-1700" by J.C. Hotten. His name appears in the Muster of Francis Mason, made at Elizabeth City, Virginia in 1624. His age was given at 16 years. From him have descended many of the Staffords of Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, and of other states further West.

About 1640 William Stafford married Frances Mason and had issue by her, a son named William (2nd), who became the father of a number of sons, two of whom were William (3rd) and John who made their homes in North Carolina; the others remained in Virginia.

Frances (Mason) Stafford died soon after the birth of their child, William 2nd. Her husband married again, his second wife being Anne. He died in 1644 of 1645

This first son seems to be the only child, and he settled York Co., Virginia near Yorktown which is located near Williamsburg. We have little information concerning him except that he married and had at least two sons, William 3rd and John who after reaching maturity emigrated to North Carolina
